So this is the ocean by G--u--y So this is the ocean by G--u--y
EDIT!: Gah this is the last time i'm touching this picture...(for a while), really fixed up the background thanks to some helpful critique, thank you K-haza and s-h-i-g-e-r-u!
-11/6/2011

And i'm finished, decided to slip Daath into the background there, pretty sure it's not that close to rocky mountains in the over world... oh well.

I still need plenty of practice concerning backgrounds and scenery but for my first one, It's not too bad.

I hope you guys like it.

Oh wow. I love the style you used to paint this! The feeling is very clear on Luke's face. It's almost like you can tell he's breathing in that ocean air.

Wow. This is absolutely incredible. I love it--the beautiful style of painting you have is just incredible, everything's so neat and clean and shaded so perfectly, and I just love the touch of crispness (totally a word) and smoothness of it all! Luke's upturned face--gyah! And his HAIR! The way you drew his poofy hair is really brilliant, and the color of it is just gorgeous~ <3
Incredible work! I hope you'll paint more, because I really love your style~ <3

Luke and Tear both look really amazing! I love the style you've made them look, and how tear is not wearing her clothes like always <3
The BG bothers me a bit. Both Tear and Luke look so detailed and you can see that a lot time has been used while drawing them, so the BG looks really hurried. Daath looks okay, because it has clear lines, but everywhere else one can see the brush storkes and especially those mountains look don't look good. If you'd make them sharper and use different colours on them, not just one, the whole picture would look a lot more professional.

I know that Luke and Tear are the main point in this picture, and they look so amazing, so it saddens me a bit that the BG doesn't make them justice. I really love how you still have a few details on the background, like the birds and their reflection!

Yes!! This looks absolutely amazing!! The clearer lines on the background make it more alive and the whole picture got ten times more volume after the changes you made!

It's just... wow. Amazing development!

I love the coloring on this. You really brought the characters to life!! The hair is so interesting. Honestly I think this is very unique! :D

Although, I think you made Luke look a lot older in this picture. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and it might just be me. But that's just what I thought. Then again you don't get abs like Luke has while being super slender, so it does make sense... I guess maybe he would look older than the concept art makes him out to be. Or at least larger. Oh those aneemus and their impossibly muscled children!

Thank you, i'm glad you think so ; _ ;

I "may" have bulked Luke up a tad, and ikr, it's like being an protagonist gives you a rock hard set of abs and a fancy haircut.

This looks nice already without color. What game/show/movie are they from?
Also, the title reminds me of an Evanescence song. Coincidence? I think so.

Thanks, the characters are from Tales of the Abyss, oh man if you haven't played this yet you gotta check it out sometime, it's AMAZING (if you liked Symphonia then i'm almost positive you'll love this).

heheh, the title and the image are both a work in progress at the moment as you can see.

I thought so. Then they must be Luke and Tear. I have never played TotA because it never found its way to Europe. They're releasing it for the 3DS in November, though, so I can finally play it. Thanks to some fanart without spoiler warning I already know one big story twist. Meh. Anway, can't wait for the finished version of your drawing :)

Oh so you're done :)

Shading is very smooth, the faces feature a lot of detail - I really like it, but you already guessed that. Keep it in mind, though.

The background is composed quite nicely with my favorite part being the bridge/tower to the far left.
Overall I think you need to think "bigger". Start off with a really huge brush and slowly work down to smaller sizes as you come to drawing the details. It will add a more paintsy look to your drawings and get rid of those few spots where you'd think this is a pixel work (Tear's hair!).

I know it takes a lot of courage to just start painting but the shapes emerging from it just by accident are really worth it. This applies to backgrounds a lot more than to the actual characters in the foreground, at least as long as you're drawing anime.

Critique is always appreciated as well as the tips, it helps me improve.

I've already started working more on backgrounds/scenery, such as flowers, grass, clouds, and distant mountains, pretty much everything in this picture.

I'm currently studying other pieces of artwork with a lot of detail in them, and trying to replicate small bits of it, it's going well, you can bet my next picture will be even better.

I see. Sounds like you're having fun experimenting with background techniques. I'm a little jealous :/ But anyway, looking forward to seeing the next one.
